Both IMA founders and the majority of the virtual worlds community support the use of open source software. As such, there are many open source projects associated with virtual worlds, virtual reality, and synthetic environments. U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, who invented the first compiler for a computer language, said "The most dangerous phrase in the language is we've always done it this way." IMA is inspired by Grace and focused on design thinking by not doing things the same way we have always done - in our founding, our hybrid structure, our innovative policies, and our community-driven approach.
